As an incentive and reward for excellent compliance with orthodontic treatment, our patients are offered tokens called "Wooden Nickels" that may be traded in for prizes or money.

You have the potential to receiving nickels on every visit, but to qualify for any nickels you first MUST be an A or B brusher! You can do it!

AN A OR B BRUSHER HAS SPOTLESS TEETH AND HEALTHY GUMS – 1 NICKEL

The health of your teeth is critical when wearing braces. We will be looking closely at your oral hygiene, and work with you to make improvements where necessary.

NO NICKELS WILL BE AWARDED UNLESS YOU HAVE ACHIEVED THIS GOAL FIRST

Additional nickels can be earned by doing the following:

NO LOOSE OR BROKEN BRACKETS/BANDS; NO DAMAGED APPLIANCES –      1 NICKEL

Make sure to follow the rules as outlined in the "Food for Thought" sheet, avoiding sticky and hard foods.

WEARING HEADGEAR, FACEMASK OR ELASTICS AS INSTRUCTED – 1 NICKEL

If you are wearing either headgear or elastics, you must follow instructions exactly regarding consistent wear.

BE ON TIME FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT – 1 NICKEL

We appreciate punctual people! You will get one nickel for being here early or on time. Please check in at the reception desk so that we know you are here.

GOOD GRADES – 6-12 NICKELS

If you bring us a copy of your report card we will give you 1 nickel for every "B" and 2 nickels for every "A" in the following subject areas (limit 6 subjects): Math, Reading, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, and PE (Some subjects can be substituted if you don't have one, e.g., Spanish for Language Arts).

READING – 1 NICKEL per book

Make a list of all books you have read since your last visit. For each book (up to 4 books per week) you will be given one nickel. Damaged appliances will prevent collecting this award, as well as others. You must present your list at each visit in order to collect this bonus nickel.

TURNING IN NICKELS— any time!

You may turn in nickels for prizes at any time. The number posted on the prize indicates how many nickels it costs. All nickels must be turned in once your braces are finished. (It helps if you have your nickels counted)

NO NICKELS ARE GIVEN FOR RETAINER CHECK APPOINTMENTS, ONLY ACTIVE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT. Nickels may be traded in for money ONLY at the end of phase II (full braces) orthodontic treatment. Each nickel is added up (with a value of .25 cents each) and a check will be sent in the patient's name in a few weeks. A total value of up to $100 in cash & prizes can be awarded.
